How to play

About this guide

This guide explains how to trace, color, and draw freely in Crayon Trace on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

For every setting and its starting value, see the Settings guide.

Choose a picture

Open the level collection and pick a picture. Some pictures ask you to trace an outline; coloring pictures ask you to trace and color. Choose a scored difficulty, or choose Free Drawing to draw without a score. The picture remains a guide in Free Drawing.

Changing difficulty later in Settings asks for a parent check. It resets stars and unlocked levels but keeps saved drawings.

Pick up a crayon

Choose a crayon and draw. Tracing uses the printed line’s color. Coloring and Free Drawing offer all colors. Use a finger or supported stylus on iPhone or iPad, or a mouse or trackpad on Mac.

Trace the outline

Follow the guide with the crayon in the line's color. The guide can fade after your first mark; Settings controls the fade time. On Easy and in Free Drawing, it never fades. On coloring pictures, tracing the outline matters to the result as well as filling the regions.

Add color

Choose a colored crayon and draw on the paper. Use ‘Inside lines’ in the wooden toolbox on every level and at every difficulty. When this control is on, a coloring stroke stays in the area where it began until you lift the crayon. It can reach the line but never paints over a line you traced.

Fill a closed area

Where the paint bucket is available, choose a crayon, select the bucket and tap to fill. No passing score is needed first. Draw a closed outline to contain the color; the printed guide alone will not stop it.

Erase or start over

Use the eraser to remove marks. Use Clear to remove the current drawing and start again.

Undo or redo

Use Undo to reverse your last drawing action. Use Redo to reapply an action you just undid. These controls also cover fills, erasing, and clearing while their history remains available.

See small details

Zoom in and pan around the enlarged picture. Magnifying Glass shows a close-up near the active crayon or eraser; use its drawing-screen button to switch it on or off. It starts off on every device. Choose from five manual line widths in the wooden toolbox on iPhone, iPad and Mac. On supported iPads, Apple Pencil pressure also changes crayon width.

Check your result

Choose Next when you are ready. In scored activities, follow the outline and match the picture’s colors to earn stars. Your difficulty sets the stars needed to continue. Free Drawing has no score and lets you choose every picture.

Return to your drawing

The game keeps your best-star results and saves unfinished drawings on the device, so you can come back later. It works offline and needs no account. Each difficulty keeps its own drawings. Clear and Retry remove that drawing's saved copy, and so does choosing Next when it earns enough stars to continue; otherwise it stays saved. The Settings guide explains what each reset keeps.
